ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the clinical efficacy of posterior cervical pedicle screw short-segment internal fixation for the treatment of atlantoaxial fracture and dislocation.@*METHODS@#The clinical data of 60 patients with atlantoaxial vertebral fracture and dislocation underwent surgery between January 2015 and January 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into study group and control group according to different surgical methods. There were 30 patients in study group, including 13 males and 17 females, with an average age of (39.32±2.85) years old, were underwent short-segment internal fixation with posterior cervical pedicle screws. There were 30 patients in control group, including 12 males and 18 females, with an average age of (39.57±2.90) years old, were underwent posterior lamina clip internal fixation of the atlas. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative ambulation time, hospitalization time and complications between two groups were recorded and compared. The pain visual analogue scale(VAS), Japanese Orthopedic Association(JOA) score of neurological function, and fusion status were evaluated between two groups.@*RESULTS@#All patients were followed up for at least 12 months. The study group was better than control group in operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative off-bed activity time, and hospital stay (P=0.000). One case of respiratory tract injury occurred in study group. In control group, 2 cases occurred incision infection, 3 cases occurred respiratory tract injury, and 3 cases occurred adjacent segmental joint degeneration. The incidence of complications in study group was lower than that in control group (χ2=4.705, P=0.030). At 1, 3, 7 days after operation, VAS of study group was lower than that of control group(P=0.000). At 1, 3 months after operation, JOA score of study group was higher than that of control group(P=0.000). At 12 months after operation, all the patients in the study group achieved bony fusion. In control group, there were 3 cases of poor bony fusion and 3 cases of internal fixation fracture, the incidence rate was 20.00%(6/30). The difference between two groups was statistically significant (χ2=4.629, P=0.031).@*CONCLUSION@#Posterior cervical short-segment pedicle screw fixation for atlantoaxial fracture and dislocation has the advantages of less trauma, shorter operation time, fewer complications, and less pain, and can promote the recovery of nerve function as soon as possible.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of mitochondrial calcium uniporter(MCU)regulator 1(MCUR1)on proliferation,cell cycle and apoptosis of K562 cells and the possible molecular mechanism.Methods Recombinant plasmid vectors containing short hairpin RNAs(shRNAs)targeting MCUR1 were transfected into K562 cells,before the K562 cells stably expressing low MCUR1 were selected with G418.The expression of MCUR1 mRNA was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR)assays.Western blotting(WB)assays were used to detect the expressions of MCUR1,P53,BAX and BCL2.The proliferation,cell cycle and apoptosis of K562 cells were detected by cell counting kit-8(CCK-8)assays and flow cytometry, respectively.Results The results of qRT-PCR and WB assays revealed that MCUR1 was stably down-regulated at mRNA and protein levels in the K562 cells transfected with shRNAs targeting MCUR1.Knockdown of MCUR1 significantly inhibited the cell proliferation, induced the cell apoptosis, but did not influence the cells cycle.Meanwhile, knockdown of MCUR1 increased the expression of P53 protein and the ratio of protein BAX/BCL2 in K562 cells.Conclusion MCUR1 promotes cell proliferation and inhibits cell apoptosis in K 562 cells.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore action mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Fenglong" (ST 40) for treatment of hyperlipidemia.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Forty SPF-grade SD rats were randomly divided into a normal group (group A), a model group (group B), a model diet-control group (group C), a model + EA group (group D) and model diet-control + EA group (group E), 8 cases in each one. The rats in group A were fed with normal diet continuously while those in the rest 4 groups were fed with high-fat diet to establish hyperlipidemia model. Afterwards, the rats in group C and group E were fed with normal diet, while EA at "Fenglong" (ST 40) was applied in group D and group E, 30 min per time, once a day. After 28 days of treatment, macrophage was collected in each group. Oil red O-staining was applied to detect the formation of foam cells, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISE) was adopted to measure the contents of total cholesterol (TC) in macrophage and analyze the rate of cholesterol efflux.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The counts of positive cells of oil red O-staining and the contents of TC in the group B, group C and group D were significantly increased compared with those in the group A (all P < 0.01). The counts of positive cells and contents of TC in the group C, group D and group E were significantly clecreased compared with those in the group B (all P < 0.01), and the decline in group D was more obvious than that in the group C (all P < 0.01). Compared with group C and group D, the counts of positive cells and contents of TC in the group E was obviously decreased (all P < 0.01), which was not statistically different from group A (P > 0.05). In the meantime, compared with group C, the rate of cholesterol efflux in group D and group E was significantly increased (both P < 0.01), and the rise in group E was more obvious than that in the group D.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The electroacupuncture at "Fenglong" (ST 40) could significantly prohibit the transformation of macrophage into foam cell and increase rate of cholesterol efflux in macrophage, which could prevent and reverse the formation of foam cell and play an essential role in treating hyperlipidemia and stopping it from developing into a further level.</p>

ABSTRACT

Muscovy ducks reovirus (DRV) is an important pathogen with a high mortality rate in Muscovy ducks, the researches in the test and the immunity were useful for the prevention and control of DRV infection. In this study, the S3 genes of the three Fujian DRVs were cloned by RT-PCR and sequencing technology. It was found that DRV-YH and YJL were close to avian reovirus (ARV) in the genetic distance, with high identities ranged from 94. 6% to 98. 9%, however, the identities of DRV-YB strain and reference ARV strains in the S3 gene were only 60.6% - 61.7%. The expression vector pET-30a-S3 harboring DRV YB strain S3 gene was constructed and transformed into E. coli BL21, and then the fusion sigmaB protein expression was induced with IPTG. The SDS-PAGE of the expressed products indicated that the fusion protein of approximately 42ku in molecular weight was expressed highly in inclusion body, and made up 67. 7% of the total proteins. The most efficient concentration of IPTG and inducing time were 0. 1 mM and 5h respectively, while the best temperature for expression was 37 degrees C. After purification with the Ni2+ affinity chromatography, the fusion sigmaB protein was 93% of the total proteins, and the purified protein amounted to 0. 86g/L. The Western blot analysis showed that the fusion aB protein was recognized specifically by the antiserum against DRV, confirming that the recombinant fusion protein had good immunoreactivity.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the mechanism of electroacupuncture(EA) at "Fenglong" (ST 40) in hyperlipidemia (HLP) rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Forty health SD rats were randomly divided into a normal control group (group A), a high fat forage feed group (group B) and a high fat forage feed treatment group (group C), a high fat forage + normal forage feed group (group D) and a high fat forage + normal forage feed treatment group (group E), eight rats in each group. EA was applied at "Fenglong" (ST 40) for the rats in group C and group E, once daily. After treatment of 30 days, blood lipid levels of rats, including total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in plasma were tested. Real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western Blotting were applied to detect the gene expression changes of the contents of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha), liver X receptor alpha (LXR-alpha) and retinoid X receptor alpha (RXR-alpha) in liver tissue of rats.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with group A, the contents of TC, LDL-C were significantly elevated in group B and group D (all P < 0.01); compared with group B, above indices were significantly decreased in group D (all P < 0.01). After the treatment of EA at "Fenglong"(ST 40), the contents of TC, LDL-C were significantly decreased (all P < 0.01), and the contents of TG, HDL-C did not change obviously (all P > 0.05). Compared with group A, the mRNA and protein contents of ABCA1, PPARalpha, LXR-alpha and RXR-alpha were decreased obviously in group B and group D (all P < 0.01). But compared with group B, the above indices were decreased in the group D. There were signficantly increasing in the protein content of ABCA1, PPARalpha, RXR-alpha and LXR-alpha mRNA after the treatment of EA (all P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>EA at "Fenglong" (ST 40) has some therapeutic effect on decrease the content of TC, LDL-C in rats of hyperlipemia and improve the gene expression of ABCA1, PPARalpha, LXR-alpha and RXR-alpha mRNA so as to promote reverse cholesterol transport.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare the treatment results of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and conventional radiotherapy (2D) for patients with locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Five hundred and twenty seven patients with stage III NSCLC treated between Jan 2000 and Dec 2006 were included in this study. Among them, 253 cases were treated with 3D-CRT, and 274 with conventional radiotherapy. In the 3D group, 159 (62.8%) patients received chemoradiotherapy, 77 with total radiotherapy dose of > 60 Gy, 49 with 50 - 60 Gy. In the 2D group, 127 (46.4%) patients received chemoradiotherapy, 48 with total radiotherapy dose of > 60 Gy, 75 with 50 - 60 Gy.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The 1-, 3-, 5-year overall survival rates (OS) and median survival time for patients treated with 3D-CRT were 73.3%, 26.1%, 14.4% and 20.1 months, respectively, and that of patients treated with 2D radiotherapy were 61.0%, 13.8%, 8.0% and 15.6 months, respectively (P = 0.002). The 1-, 3-, 5-year cause-specific survival rates (CSS) were 79.0%, 33.3%, and 20.8% for the 3D group and 65.1%, 16.7%, 11.2%, respectively, for the 2D group (P = 0.000). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year locoregional control rates were 71.6%, 34.3% and 31.0% for patients treated with 3D radiotherapy and 57.3%, 22.1% and 19.2%, respectively, for patients treated with 2D treatment (P = 0.002). The results of multivariate analysis showed that 3D-CRT, KPS, clinical tumor response and pretreatment hemoglobin level were independently associated with increased OS and CSS. No statistically significant differences were found between the radiation complications in the two groups.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The results of our study demonstrate that 3D-conformal radiotherapy improves the survival rate in patients with stage III NSCLC compared with that of 2D radiation therapy.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the effect of thoracic radiation therapy (TRT) on patients with extensive stage small-cell lung cancer (SCLC).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One hundred and fifty-four patients with extensive stage SCLC treated in our department between January 2003 and December 2006 were enrolled in this study. Eighty nine patients received chemotherapy and thoracic radiation therapy (ChT/TRT), and 65 patients were treated with chemotherapy alone (ChT without TRT). The chemotherapy was CE (carboplatin and etoposide), PE (cisplatin and etoposide) or CAO (CTX, ADM and VCR) regimens. The total dose of thoracic irradiation was 40-60 Gy with 1.8 - 2.0 Gy per fraction.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>For the whole group, the median survival time (MST) was 13.7 months, the 2-year and 5-year overall survival rates were 27.9% and 8.1%, respectively. The MST, overall survival rates at 2 years and 5 years in the ChT/TRT group and ChT without TRT group were 17.2 months, 36.0%, 10.1% and 9.3 months, 16.9%, 4.6%, respectively (P = 0.001). The median progression-free survival (PFS) for all patients was 8.0 months, the 2-year and 5-year PFS were 13.6% and 8.2%, respectively. The median PFS, 2-year and 5-year PFS in the ChT/TRT group and ChT without TRT group were 10.0 months, 17.4%, 10.5% and 6.2 months, 9.8%, 4.9%, respectively (P < 0.001). The incidence of intra-thoracic local failure was 29.6% in the ChT/TRT group and 70.0% in the ChT/without TRT group (P = 0.000).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Chemotherapy plus thoracic radiation therapy can improve the overall survival, progress free survival and reduce local regional failure rate in patients with extensive stage SCLC compared with that by chemotherapy alone.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the effect of anti-psychotic treatment on the expression of Neuregulin-1 (NRG1) mRNA in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of schizophrenia patients.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The NRG1 mRNA in peripheral blood lymphocytes was measured using semi-quantitative reverse transcription (RT)-PCR in 80 first-onset schizophrenia patients, 37 sibling controls and 83 non-related controls. The patients were treated with risperdone and quetiapine for 4 weeks. Positive and negative symptom scale (PANSS) was used to evaluate the severity and clinical efficacy.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Prior to the treatment, the expression of NRG1 mRNA expression was significantly lower in patients than other two groups (F=73.004, P=0.000). From the second week on, the level of NRG1 mRNA expression in patients became significantly higher than before and gradually increased, whilst no significant difference between sib and non-sib controls. Prior to the treatment, there was significant correlation (r=-0.232, P=0.038) between the level of NRG1 mRNA and PANSS scores. Four weeks after the treatment, a significant correlation between the reduction rate of PANSS and the change of NRG1 mRNA (r=0.27, P=0.016).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The expression of NRG1 gene mRNA is associated with schizophrenia. Decreased expression of NRG1 may play a role in the development of schizophrenia, which can be improved by anti-psychotic drugs.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the proliferation and migration of neural stem cells (NSCs) of acute cerebral ischemia rats and the intervention of scalp-acupuncture (SA), and to study its action of mechanism in treating cerebral ischemia.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One hundred healthy Wistar rats were randomly divided into the sham-operation group (n = 10), the model group (n = 45), and the SA group (n = 45). The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model was established using the modified suture method. No suture or perfusion was given to rats in the sham-operation group, but these rats received the same procedures as those for modeled rats. After modeling routine feeding was given to rats in the model group and the sham-operative group without any other treatment. SA was successively given to rats in the SA group after successful ischemia reperfusion, once daily. Rats were anesthetized and sacrificed by peritoneally injecting bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) at the dose of 50 mg/kg on the 7th (T1), 14th day (T2), and 28th day (T3) after modeling. Neurological severity score (NSS) was assessed. The BrdU positive cells and the BrdU/PSA-NCAM positive cells of the dentate gyrus (DG) were counted using immunofluorescence assay.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with the model group at the same time points, the NSS decreased in the SA group. Significant difference was shown at T3 (P<0.05). Compared with the sham-operative group at the same time point, the BrdU positive cells and BrdU/PSA-NCAM positive cells of the model group obviously increased. Compared with the model group at the same time point, the BrdU positive cells and BrdU/ PSA-NCAM positive cells of the SA group obviously increased, showing significant difference (P<0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>SA could promote the proliferation and migration of endogenous NSCs, which may possibly be one of its mechanisms in treating cerebral ischemia.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To introduce the experiences of applying MR to diagnose the imaging characters in chronic injury of the elbows in athletes.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From September 2005 to May 2008, 40 elbows of 34 athletes, included 21 males and 13 females,aged from 6 to 16 years old, averaged (12.3 +/- 3.1) years were taken axial, saggital and coronal planes MR Imaging.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Magnetic resonance imaging showed thickening and effusion of olecranon synovial plicaes, bone marrow edema of lower humeral ossification, radial head, olecranon, ulna coronoid, ulnar collateral ligament trauma in chronic injury of the elbow joint.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>MRI is a susceptible method for the diagnoses of chronic injury of the elbow.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the association of the Neuregulin 1(NRG1) gene polymorphism with schizophrenia by analyzing allele transmission in schizophrenic parent-proband trios.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Quantitative real-time PCR was used to check the genotypes of four SNPs-rs221533(C/T), rs7820838(C/T), 433E1006(A/G) and rs3924999(C/T), located at the 5o terminus of the Nrg1 gene, in 258 Chinese Han schizophrenic parent-proband trios. The transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) program (Genehunter software 2.0) was used to evaluate the association of the NRG1 gene with schizophrenia.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>For all the subjects, the genotypes of the 4 SNPs were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In all the 258 parent-proband trios, there were significant transmission disequilibrium in allelic transmission of C, A, T from rs221533, 433E1006, rs3924999 loci respectively (rs221533: chi-square was 27.45, P was 0.000; 433E1006: chi-square was 56.08, P was 0.000; rs3924999: chi-square was 10.53, P was 0.001). Haplotype was analyzed at frequency exceeding 1%. In three-marker-haplotype, C/C/G and C/C/A (marker order: rs221533, rs7820838, 433E1006) transmitted predominantly(C/C/G: chi-square was 5.26, P was 45.08; C/C/A: chi-square was 0.026, P was 0.000). In four-marker-haplotype (marker order: rs221533, rs7820838, 433E1006, rs3924999), C/C/G/T, C/C/A/C and C/C/A/T showed transmission disequilibrium (C/C/G/T: chi-square was 10.71, P was 0.001; C/C/A/C: chi-square was 8.83, P was 0.006, C/C/A/T: chi-square was 27.00, P was 0.000). In the positive subtype of parent-proband trios, C/T/G/C hapoltype transmission was not observed.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The NRG1 gene polymorphism is significantly associated with schizophrenia in Chinese Han, especially in the positive subtype of schizophrenia.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare the therapeutic effect differences between electroacupuncture at Jiaji (EX-B 2) combined with blood-letting plus cupping and western medicine therapy.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Fifty-three cases were randomly divided into an observation group (n=31) and a control group (n=22). The observation group was treated by electroacupuncture at Jiaji (EX-B 2) combined with blood-letting with a plum-blossom needle at the affected parts plus cupping, once each day. The control group was treated by oral administration of Valaciclovir Hydrochlordide, Indomethacin, Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B12.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The cured and markedly effective rate of 96.8% in the observation group was better than that of 81.8% in the control group (P < 0.05), and improvements of pain, pruritus, burning sensation and sleep in the observation group were superior to those of the control group (all P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Electroacupuncture at Jiaji (EX-B 2) combined with blood-letting and cupping is a better therapy for herpes zoster and its therapeutic effect is better than that of routine western medicine therapy.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the prognostic factors and the principles of treatment of primary esophageal small cell carcinoma (SCEC) retrospectively.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The data of 126 patients with histologically confirmed SCEC treated in our department between May 1985 and June 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. 85 patients were in limited disease stage (LD) and 41 patients as extensive disease stage (ED) according to the Veterans Administration Lung Study Group staging system. Among the 84 patients treated with esophagectomy, 8 cases were in stage I, 16 in stage IIa, 10 in stage IIb, 40 in stage III, 4 in stage IVa and 6 in stage IVb, according to the TNM system (6(th) edition, AJCC). Cox's hazard regression model was used to identify the prognostic factors, and Chi-square test to detect the difference of frequencies among different groups. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank methods were used to estimate and compare the survival rates.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The median follow-up duration of this series was 13 months. One hundred and eight patients died of the disease during the follow-up, 10 were still alive and 8 were lost to follow-up. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates (OS) were 52.2%, 15.9%, and 12.2%, respectively, with a median survival time (MST) of 12.5 months. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year OS were 62.1%, 30.8%, and 22.4% with a MST of 14.0 months for LD, and 29.3%, 13.6% and 2.7% with a MST of 7.0 months for ED, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in OS between LD and ED (P = 0.0001). The MST of the patients treated with chemotherapy was 14.5 months, significantly longer than the 5.2 months of the patients without (P = 0.0001). Multivariate analysis showed that stage (HR 1.91, 95% CI 1.26 approximately 2.91, P = 0.002), length of the primary lesion (HR 1.75, 95% CI 1.17 approximately 2.63, P = 0.007), and chemotherapy (HR 0.42, 95% CI 0.28 approximately 0.65, P = 0.000) were independent prognostic factors.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Esophageal small cell carcinoma is a systemic disease. The tumor stage (LD or ED), length of the primary lesion and chemotherapy are independent prognostic factors. Therefore, a systemic therapy based on chemotherapy should be recommended.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the analgesic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) combined with acupoint-injection in treating lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty patients with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation were divided randomly into treatment group (30 cases, group A) and control group (30 cases, group B) according to random digits table. Involved 31 males and. 29 females in the study,the age was from 35 to 62 years with an average of 48.3 years. The patients in group A were treated with EA (once a day, a total of 10 times) and acupoint-injection (once every two days, a total of 5 times) at L4 Jiaji (EX-B2), L5 Jiaji (EX-B2), Zhibian (BL54), Huantiao (GB30), Yanglingquan (GB34), Weizhong (BLA0) and Kunlun (BL60); and the patients in group B were treated with single EA (Once a day, a total of 10 times). After 10 days of treatment, the visual analogue scale (VAS) was adopted to examine and compare the main pain score, and the clinical effects were compared between two groups from the symptoms and signs in accordance with efficacy criteria.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The paregoric effect of group A was better than that of group B, there was significant differences in the main pain score between two groups (t = 7.18, P < 0.01). The clinical effect of group A was better than that of group B,there was significant differences between two groups (u = 2.91, P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>EA combined with acupoint-injection is a convenient and highly effective therapy for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation, which can effectively relieve the pain of the patients, should be to promote clinical use.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the association between survival and postoperative three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) in patients with resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Eighty-four patients were treated with surgery and postoperative 3DCRT for NSCLC. Sixty-five (77.4%) patients received lobectomy, and 19 (22.6%) received pneumonectomy. Fifty-four (64.3%) patients achieved R0 resection and 30 cases (35.8%) received R1/R2 resection. Fifty-two patients were of stage IIIA and 24 patients were of stage IIIB. Photon energy of 6 MV was used for all the patients. The median 3DCRT dose was 60 Gy (40 - 70 Gy) with a fraction size of 2 Gy. Thirty-seven patients received median 3 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. The median follow-up was 35.5 months for survivors.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The overall 3-year survival rate was 58.6%, and the 4-year overall survival rate was 43.9%. Of the 43 patients who had treatment failure, only 8 (9.9%) patients showed intrathoracic recurrence, but 38 (46.9%) patients had distant metastasis. The univariate analysis for all patients showed that sex, age, weight loss, tumor size, pathology and stage were not correlated with prognosis. R1/R2 resection was associated with a significantly worse survival. Toxicities were acceptable, with 9 (11.1%) patients appeared higher than NCI CTC grade 2 radiation pneumonitis.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>In a population-based cohort, postoperative 3DCRT for NSCLC provides a good prognosis, and the radiation-related pneumonitis is acceptable.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To probe the regulative effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Fenglong" (ST 40) on blood lipids in hyperlipidemia (HLP) rats and the mechanism.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Eighty Wistar rats were randomly divided into a normal group (fed with basal forage), a model group (fed with high fat forage), an EA group (fed with high fat forage + EA treatment), a western medicine group (fed with high fat forage + Pravastatin sodium). Contents of serum total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), endothelin (ET), nitric oxide (NO) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) were determined before and after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with the normal group, the body weight, levels of TC, TG, LDL-C and ET were significantly elevated (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) and the levels of HDL-C, NO and CGRP were significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in the model group; compared with the model group, the body weight, levels of TC, TG and LDL-C were significantly decreased (P < 0.01) and the levels of NO and CGRP were significantly increased in the western medicine group and the EA group (P < 0.01, P < 0.05); compared with the EA group, HDL-C level significantly increased in the western medicine group (P < 0.01), and ET level decreased in the EA group and the western medicine group with no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Both EA and Pravastatin sodium have better benign regulative effects on TC, TG, LDL-C, NO and CGRP and can decrease ET level to a certain extent in the rat of hyperlipidemia.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare therapeutic effects of acupoint-injection and Chinese herbs for treatment of lumbago-leg pain induced by primary osteoporosis.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Ninety cases of lumbago-leg pain induced by primary osteoporosis were randomly divided into a Jiaji point group, a reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group and a medication group, 30 cases in each group. For the Jiaji point group, bilateral Jiaji points T11, L1, L3, L5 and S2 were selected; for the reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group, Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), Taixi (KI 3), Taibai (SP 3), Taichong (LR 3), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Xuehai (SP 10) were selected and the medication group were treated with oral administration of Qianggu Capsules. Changes of bone mass density (BMD) and pain cumulative score after treatment were observed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The total effective rate was 93.3% in the Jiaji point group, 73.3% in the reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group and 60.0% in the medication group, the Jiaji point group being better than both the reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group and the medication group (P<0.01, P<0.05). In reduction of pain cumulative score and improvement of BMD, the Jiaji point group was better than both the reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group and the medication group (P<0.01), and the reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group was better than the medication group (P<0.05, P<0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Acupoint-injection has a definite therapeutic effect on lumbago-leg pain induced by primary osteoporosis, and the therapeutic effect of the Jiaji point group is better than the reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To search for the best way to elevate the clinical therapeutic effect in the hemiplegic patient of cerebral thrombosis at convalescent period.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Adopting single-blind, randomized controlled method, 90 cases of cerebral thrombosis at convalescent period were assigned to 3 groups: a scalp acupuncture group (group A), a rehabilitation therapy group (group B) and a scalp acupuncture combined with rehabilitation therapy group (group C). Group A were treated with scalp acupuncture at the anterior oblique line of vertex-temporal and the posterior oblique line of vertex-temporal on the healthy side; group B were treated with modern rehabilitation medical therapy, making limb function treatment; group C were treated with the scalp acupuncture in the group A combined with the rehabilitation therapy in the group B. Improvement of neural function defect and activity of daily life (ADL), and clinical therapeutic effect were observed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After treatment, the scores of neural function defect of 6.14 +/- 0.36 in the group C was significantly lower than 8.94 +/- 0.56 in the group A and 8.64 +/- 0.49 in the group B (P<0.05); the score of ADL of 88.39 +/- 10.02 and clinical therapeutic effect of 90.0% in the group C were significantly higher than 74.19 +/- 12.12 and 76.7% in the group A and 72.29 +/- 11.52 and 73.3% in the group B (P<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The scalp acupuncture and rehabilitation therapy have synergistic action in improving motor function for the hemiplegic patient of cerebral thrombosis at convalescent period, and it is a better method for cerebral thrombosis at the convalescent stage.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To search for a new method for treatment of acute gouty arthritis.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty cases of acute gouty arthritis were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group, 30 cases in each group. The treatment group were treated with electroacupuncture combined with point-injection, and the control group with western medicine. Their therapeutic effects were observed and serum uric acid contents were detected before and after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>There was a very significantly difference between the two groups in the therapeutic effect (P<0. 01) and the analgesic effect in the treatment group was better than that in the control group (P<0. 01). The treatment group was superior to the control group in decrease of blood uric acid (P<0. 01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Electroacupuncture combined with point-injection is an effective method for treatment of acute gouty arthritis, and it can decrease blood uric acid content.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe effects of point injection at cervical Jiaji points on endothelin (ET) and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) in the patient of ischemic stroke (IS).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Seventy cases of IS were randomly divided into a treatment group of 35 cases and a control group of 35 cases. The treatment group were treated with acupoint injection at cervical Jiaji points and routine acupuncture, and the control group only with routine acupuncture. Two weeks constituted one course with an interval of one day between courses. After two courses and 4 courses, changes of ET and CGRP were detected, and after 4 courses, their clinical therapeutic effects were evaluated.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Acupoint injection at cervical Jiaji points could significantly decrease ET and increase CGRP level; the cured and markedly effective rate was 88.6% in the treatment group and 68.6% in the control group with a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Acupoint injection at cervical Jiaji points has a very good clinical therapeutic effect and can improve ET and CGRP levels in the patient of IS.</p>
